SDRS member and Consulting Rosarian Bill Ornelas facilitated two workshops in May of this year to teach our members how to propagate roses from cuttings. He is once again offering another workshop in September. This one will be on Saturday, September 26 th

from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Ornelas home in Clairemont. It is fairly central in location so we are hoping that many of you will be able to come.

Bill and his wife Elaine have been experimenting with rooting roses for several years and Bill believes he is narrowing down a soil and condition formula that will increase rooting success. Even though the process is not 100% successful, the rate of success is improving. Some varieties are more difficult to root than others and the variable conditions in our county also contribute to success or failure. Participants will just need to be patient with the process.

For this workshop Bill will supply the containers, the rooting medium and rooting hormone and the hands-on instruction. You will need to supply the rose stems, up to five per container. It is important to not bring a rose stem that has not matured, that means a rose bud or rose that has not yet dropped its petals. Cut stems can be stored up to 5 days if refrigerated, either in water or in a Ziploc bag wrapped with a damp paper towel. The cost is $25 for the workshop and one set of rooting material. It will cost $10 for each additional set of rooting supplies. Please bring cash of check (payable to San Diego Rose Society). There will be 2 instructors who will demonstrate to 8 people.
